A good St. John itinerary is less about cramming in sights and more about pacing beach days, snorkel stops, and a hike or two so you actually relax. This St. John itinerary lays out four plans, for 1, 3, 5, and 7 days, so you can match the island to however long you have. St. John is small, about 20 square miles, but roughly 60 percent of it is protected national park, so there is far more to do than a single beach day suggests.

Before you plan your St. John itinerary
A few things shape every plan below. There is no airport on St. John, so you arrive by ferry from St. Thomas (here is our guide on how to get to St. John). You will want a Jeep or car to reach the North Shore beaches, since the island has no rideshare and limited buses. Bring reef safe sunscreen, which is required by law and not sold on island. And plan beach mornings early, because parking at Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay fills before 9 a.m. on busy days. For the full rundown of beaches and activities, see our St. John beaches guide and things to do on St. John.
1 day in St. John: the day trip
If you only have a day, likely a day trip from St. Thomas or a cruise ship, keep it simple and stay on the North Shore. Take an early ferry to Cruz Bay, grab a taxi or rental, and head straight to Trunk Bay for the marked underwater snorkel trail, or Maho Bay if you want the best odds of snorkeling with sea turtles. Have lunch back in Cruz Bay near the ferry dock, walk Mongoose Junction, and catch an afternoon ferry back. One island, one great beach, done well.
3 days in St. John
Day 1: Settle in, provision at Starfish Market in Cruz Bay, and spend the afternoon at Cinnamon Bay, the island’s longest beach.
Day 2: A North Shore beach day. Snorkel Trunk Bay in the morning, then move to Maho Bay for turtles, with a casual bite at Maho Crossroads.
Day 3: Add one adventure. Walk the short Leinster Bay Trail to snorkel Waterlemon Cay, widely considered the best reef in the USVI, passing the Annaberg plantation ruins on the way.
5 days in St. John
Everything in the 3 day plan, plus room to slow down and explore the rest of the island.
Day 4: Book a day charter to snorkel the outer reefs and nearby BVI cays, one of the best ways to spend a full day on the water.
Day 5: Head to the quieter south shore. Hike the short trail to Salt Pond Bay, snorkel the rocky edges, and continue to Ram Head for the island’s most dramatic view.
7 days in St. John: a full week
With a week you can trade the checklist for a rhythm: a few slow beach mornings, one or two real hikes, and time to actually use your villa.
Day 6: Hike the Reef Bay Trail down to the Taino petroglyphs. The National Park Service runs a guided version with a boat pickup at the end, worth booking if it fits your schedule.
Day 7: Spend the day in Coral Bay for a quieter side of the island, with lunch at Skinny Legs and a paddle out to the Lime Out floating taco bar. Save a final morning for your favorite beach from earlier in the week.
Where to stay to make your itinerary easy
On St. John, where you sleep decides how much of this you actually get to do. A villa near the North Shore, close to Maho, Francis, and Cinnamon, turns a morning snorkel into part of the routine instead of a planned outing.
